Murdered: Soul Suspect is a third person mystery-thriller game developed by Airtight Games and published by Square Enix. It was released June 3, 2014 in North America, June 5, 2014 in Australia, June 6, 2014 in Europe, and July 17, 2014 in Japan for PC and then September 4 for Xbox One.

The game takes place in present day Salem, Massachusetts, a town haunted by its past of hauntings and witchcraft, including the Puritan era Salem Witch Trials.

Plot[]

When Ronan O'Connor, a detective with a checkered past gets caught up in a burglary, his life is brought to an untimely end by a brutal and relentless killer.

Shocked to find himself in the afterlife, his only escape from the limbo world of Dusk is to uncover the truth behind his killer, track him down and bring him to justice using new-found supernatural abilities.

As Ronan, you have the freedom to explore the town of Salem: its wooden houses, narrow streets, Gothic churches, and mental asylum for clues. Battle demonic spirits to save Ronan's soul and uncover the shocking revelations about who is responsible for his death.

Characters[]

Ronan O'Connor - The deceased protagonist. He is trying to find his murderer. (Voiced by Jason Brooks in English, Kōichi Yamadera in Japanese)

Joy Foster - A girl who witnessed Ronan's murder. She possesses the ability to see ghosts and teams up with Ronan. (Voiced by Cassidy Lehrman in English, Mariya Ise in Japanese)

Javier "Rex" Reyes - Minor antagonist. Ronan's brother-in-law and Lieutenant of Salem police. (Voiced by Travis Willingham in English, Tōru Ōkawa in Japanese)

Abigail Williams - Primary antagonist. A ghost and a young Puritan-era girl. (Voiced by Tiffany Espenson in English, Miyuki Sawashiro in Japanese)[1]

Gameplay[]

The game features L.A. Noire type investigative areas in several locations such as apartment crime scenes, break-ins, and street shootings. As Ronan, you must find all of these clues and figure out what happened, all while finding Artifacts that point towards Salem's dark past. While finding your peace in the afterlife, there are also other dead citizens with investigations of their own that you can assist them with.

Reception[]

Murdered: Soul Suspect received mixed reviews. GamesBeat gave it an 89/100, praising its premise and gameplay as something new and inventive. Polygon also gave it a positive review, a 7/10, praising its charm and playable B-movie feel. IGN gave the game a middling review, a 5.5/10, claiming that there are a lot of neat concepts, but none of them feel developed enough. Edge gave the game a 4/10, deriding the story's weightlessness and the lack of development with the good elements. It currently has a Metacritic rating of 47, "Generally Unfavorable reviews".
